Mad Monk: A Mysterious and Unique Bar Design

The inspiration for this design came from the legendary Ji Gong, a monk known for his love of travel and alcohol. The owner, who shares a deep admiration for Ji Gong, requested a design that would capture the essence of this eccentric monk. The result is a bar that exudes a sense of mystery and intrigue.

The most striking feature of the Mad Monk bar is its glossy black walls, which not only reflect the surroundings but also create a sense of continuity and depth. The absence of metal joints adds to the seamless appearance, with the shelves supported solely by Japanese sake bottles. These bottles not only serve as a structural element but also emit a soft, ambient light that illuminates the world of sake.

The design team, led by Tomoo Nitta, paid meticulous attention to detail, embedding lighting fixtures in the shelves to create a captivating glow from below. The shelves themselves are made from a thin 18mm material, allowing the light to permeate through and highlight the collection of sake bottles. This innovative approach not only adds to the visual appeal but also showcases the beauty and diversity of the world's liquors.

The Mad Monk bar is more than just a visually stunning space; it also boasts a timeless atmosphere. The luxurious sofa and chandelier, carefully synchronized with the sharp shelves, create a sense of tension and elegance. The design seamlessly blends modern sophistication with traditional elements, resulting in a space that is both inviting and intriguing.

Completed in November 2019, the Mad Monk bar is located in Tokyo's Nihonbashi-hamacho district. The interior construction area spans 117.4 square meters, including a kitchen area of 15.8 square meters. The total construction cost amounted to 30.8 million, including furniture, kitchen equipment, and fixtures.

The Mad Monk design has been recognized for its excellence and innovation. In 2021, it was awarded the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This award acknowledges the design's practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial standards.
